These are the questions asked:
Tell us about your blog
I blog at RuthMakesMoney.com about genuine ways to make money online, including eBay reselling, freelance writing, and matched betting. I quit my job over seven years ago to become self-employed, and it’s basically the resource that I wish I had myself along the journey! Whether someone wants to earn a little extra to pay off a credit card, or ditch the 9-5 for good, I love showing them what’s possible and how they can make that happen.
What supermarket do you prefer and why?
I’ve always had a big soft spot for M&S! I love the Dine In For 2 offer they do, and it’s a great occasional treat that we look forward to. It can definitely be healthier than a takeaway, and it’s good value for money too, especially considering that you get a bottle of wine thrown in. That said, for our main shop, I’m favouring Aldi these days. It’s much cheaper than the other big names, and I particularly love the fresh meat counters.
3 money saving tips for the kitchen
- Planning your meals in advance for the week is pretty common advice, and doing that definitely saves me money and cuts down on waste. I’ve learned though to add a little flexibility into your planning so it doesn’t feel too restrictive. So for example, I usually have a selection of vegetables, rice, and microwavable jacket potatoes in the freezer so I can swap side dishes around without any hassle.
- Download apps like Shopmium and CheckoutSmart to get access to great freebies in supermarkets. There’s also a load of discounts available on those apps, but avoid falling into the trap of buying something just because it’s on offer. It’s not a bargain if you won’t use it!
- Shop your own kitchen cupboards before you next go shopping, and see what you can get creative with. I did this just last week, and I managed to put together about five different lunches without spending a single extra penny.
An expensive item you can’t live without in the kitchen and why?
I love my ActiFry. I’d fancied one for ages but I delayed buying one because they’re pretty pricy, and I worried it would end up being one of those things that you chuck in the cupboard and never use. It gets used at least a few times every week though, and we absolutely love the Slimming World chips!
What is your favourite recipe?
Definitely the Nigella Lawson corned beef pie recipe that I use! It’s probably not a good bet when you’re trying to make healthier choices, but it’s amazing comfort food. We have it with the Slimming World chips or mash.
Aside from that though, I wouldn’t say I have a favourite, and I love trying out new recipes. A few years ago I challenged myself to make a new recipe once a month for a full year, and I amazed myself by actually sticking to it! It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut in the kitchen, so forcing yourself to try new things can really shake up your routines
What is your favourite kitchen gadget?
I love a good kitchen gadget, but in reality, they so rarely get used. The ActiFry is probably the only one that’s been worth the money!
Who or what inspired you to cook?
I love cooking, and for me, it’s my favourite way to switch off from work and relax at the end of a long day. Friday evenings are my favourite, because I’ll often choose something that takes a little more time or just feels a bit more special, pour a glass of wine, turn on the radio, and get down to cooking. That always gets me out of work mode, and looking forward to the weekend.
