I want to say at least 5 years now I’ve been saying that I want to make hot cross buns but I’ve never gotten around to it. This year I decided to make hot cross buns and I made them a little healthier than the rest on the market. I’ve made low-calorie hot cross buns and I love them!
I’ve been making a few low-calorie meals lately and I thought hot cross buns might be fun to make and that’s how this low-calorie hot cross bun recipe was made. They might not look traditional but they taste amazing and I wouldn’t have them any other way.
Now don’t worry, you might be thinking this recipe has loads of weird ingredients if it’s low in calories but that’s not the case. It tastes as yummy as ever and I can’t get enough. They make around 6-8 depending on the size you make them and the first batch I ended up eating two after!
Why Eat Low-Calorie Hot Cross Buns?
Simple, weight. I’ve not met anyone who counts calories who’s doing it just for fun! People eat low-calorie meals and treats because they are watching their weight. I’m a firm believer that just because it’s Christmas, Easter or your birthday you don’t have to put on tons of weight!
I’m not saying you won’t put on any weight at all if you calorie count because that’s not true, I put on a few pounds over Christmas. However, thanks to watching our calorie intake it means losing the weight and keeping it off will be much easier. That’s why I love Slimming World meals as well, they’re normally low in calories!

So as I said before, these make 12 average-sized buns although if you make them smaller I’m sure you’ll get more out of the dough and for less calories.
Let me know how you get on with them. I love the balance of flavours in them and it really tricks the brain into thinking it’s getting something full of calories although that couldn’t be further from the truth which is great!
