Are you looking for a recipe to make that you might have normally been able to eat before any IBD issues? Well, these turkey burgers with lettuce wraps are a close substitute for a beef burger in buns. Having an IBD condition means changing the way we eat which is never fun but that doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with new recipes and try new foods which is why I started to have fun with new IBD recipes.
This is a great recipe for people who are looking for general gut-friendly recipes, IBD recipes or colitis recipes. However, if you are thinking about having this as a Crohn’s recipe then I would suggest leaving the tomatoes off of the plate as they can cause flare-ups for people who have Crohn’s most of the time.
IBD Turkey Burgers And Wedges Recipe
If you have an IBD issue you’ll know that red meat is a no go and they tell you to stick with turkey or chicken. This is not something I was happy about as I love a steak or beef burger but it’s something that I had to adapt from. Thankfully, you can still make amazing burgers with both chicken and turkey mince which means you don’t have to never have a burger again.
With this recipe, I also like to grate the apple and add it to the burger mix as it gives it a more sweet and juicy texture. Always make sure you remove the apple peel first as it can cause flare-ups, which is a big issue, especially in Crohn’s recipes.
Of course, everyone knows what they are reactive to and what is to cause a flare up so it’s important to check the ingredients first and take anything out that might cause a reaction as symptoms for any IBD issue are no fun! If you had any changes in this meal let us know and we might just have to try them.

IBD Apple Turkey Burgers And Wedges Recipe Ingredients
Remember, I’m no medical professional so these are my opinions and relate to the research I’ve done online when it comes to ingredients that I use in my recipes. That being said as I live with Crohn’s I have an idea of what foods can trigger flare ups and I avoid them in my recipes.
Take a look at the ingredients I’ve used in this recipe below and make sure you change anything that might cause you a flare up.
Potato: Potato is one of the most common foods to use in IBD recipes and it’s a great food to eat during flare-ups as well as it’s fairly plain. This being said I would suggest not adding flavourings to the wedges in this recipe, I added a basic salt and pepper to give it a crunch and a subtle taste that isn’t just potato.
Lettuce: Lettuce is fine to be eaten in small amounts, having too much salad can cause flare-ups so make sure you portion how much you have. I found the big romaine lettuce leaves were great to wrap the burgers in and gave it an extra crunch.
Cucumber: Cucumber is mostly water and thankfully doesn’t cause flare-ups in small amounts. However, if cucumber does cause flare-ups it might be a good idea to peel the cucumber and try that.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes make a nice addition to some IBD recipes, however, if you are looking for a Crohn’s recipe I would advise leaving the tomatoes out of this recipe unless you know they don’t cause you to have any flare-ups.
Turkey Mince: Turkey mince just like chicken mince is a great source of protein as with most IBD conditions you can’t have red meat as it can cause flare-ups. Turkey mince is great to make burgers with and is the mince I recommend when making burgers.
Apple: Apple when peeled is great for gut friendly recipes. I grate the apple and add it with the turkey mince to give it that extra something and it tastes amazing. Apple can be used in a lot of IBD friendly recipes and I’ve even used it in this chicken and apple traybake recipe.
Remember, although I make these delicious IBD friendly recipes (if I do say so myself) you will know what foods and ingredients effect your IBD condition so don’t take chances and leave anything out that doesn’t agree with you.
